We Bet You Never Knew These Interesting Facts About “Forrest Gump”
Paramount Pictures Had a Dispute With the Writer
One person who did get cheated as a result of the film’s flop was the writer, Winston Groom. He was only paid $350,000 for the script’s rights but was promised 3% of the net profits. Of course, this turned out to be absolutely zilch.
Ultimately, the movie made no profits and so Groom was left with no major earnings. This led to a big dispute with Paramount Pictures. The dispute was settled when the studio bought the rights to another one of Groom’s books.
A Sequel Probably Won’t Happen
There may be a sequel to the book but a sequel to the movie is very unlikely to happen. The main reason for this is that nobody actually wants to do it.
Critics reckon that people will not take the risk because Forrest Gump was branded a “successful failure.” It’s just too big a risk. Tom Hanks also worried that making a comeback will damage what the cast and crew achieved in the original feature. He claims that a sequel might “ruin what we had done.”
A Screenplay For the Sequel Has Actually Been Written
Eric Roth is the man who wrote the screenplay and he received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his efforts. In addition to writing the script for Forrest Gump, he wrote scripts for other successful movies including The Insider, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
He also secretly wrote a sequel for Forrest Gump and sent it for submission on September 10, 2001. This was obviously terrible timing as after 9/11 happened, no one was interested in the script.
